UPDATE: This event has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon. The County’s Employee Resource Council has brewed up a Halloween mixer at Stone Brewery in Liberty Station. Join fellow employees for a frighteningly fun mixer on Sunday, Oct. 29 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

This is going to be fang-tastic family-friendly gathering! Get into the spirit by wearing a costume.

To attend, complete the Mixer Form AND send payment to @COSDEWA via Venmo. (See the QR code below.) Tickets, which include a fixed menu and beverage, are $20. Children tickets are $15.

A percent of event proceeds will support the County Employees’ Charitable Organization (CECO).

Paint With The SDCLA ERG This Friday!

The San Diego County Latino Association Employee Resource Group is hosting a paint night fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 6 in support of their scholarship program.

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. at Mujeres Brew House located at 1983 Julian Avenue in San Diego.

Admission for the paint night is $35 per person and payments can be made via PayPal to @SDCLA or via Venmo to @SDCLA-County.

Attend the CSDFEA Gala!

The County of San Diego Filipino-American Employees’ Association Employee Resource Group is inviting employees to attend their annual gala on Friday, Oct. 20.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the Chula Vista Golf Course located at 4475 Bonita Road in Bonita.

You can RSVP for the event by emailing csdfea@sdcounty.ca.gov. Tickets for the event will be $65 per person.

The dress code for the event will be cocktail or Filipino attire.

Watch the San Diego Premiere of 'Liwanag'

The County of San Diego Filipino-American Employees’ Association is inviting employees and their family to attend the San Diego premiere of the movie “Liwanag.”

The event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 15 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the San Diego Central Library’s Neil Morgan Auditorium located at 330 Park Blvd in San Diego.

CSDFEA is hosting the premiere with the City of San Diego Filipino-American Employees’ Association and the Filipino Migrant Center to commemorate Filipino-American History Month in October.

Tickets for the screening can be reserved here. Entry to the event is $20 for CSDFAEA/CSDFEA members and $25 for non-members. Payment can be made at the door or in advance via Venmo @csdfaea.

County Archives Celebrate American Archives Month

October marks American Archives Month and the County of San Diego, along with the Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk (ARCC) East County Branch Office and Archives located in Santee, are joining in the celebration.

Throughout American Archives Month, repositories across the nation emphasize the significance of records with enduring value. These valuable documents encompass maps, deeds, historical birth, marriage and death certificates, as well as various official records dating back to 1850.

For preservation purposes, microfilm stands as the preferred format, boasting an impressive shelf-life of approximately 500 years when stored under suitable conditions. Currently, the ARCC’s collection has a substantial 51,622 microfilm rolls.

To commemorate the month, ARCC’s expert archivists who manage the central repository and facilitate public access to invaluable historical records cordially extends and invitation for you to come and explore the facilities.

You can engage in research and peruse publicly accessible documents, either through digital means or by arranging an appointment, contingent on the documents’ physical condition.

ARCC has two big events taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 25 that all are welcome to join that include a “Reading Room Naming” ribbon-cutting ceremony and an “Open House” where people can drop by to view a small exhibit, ask questions, or participate in scheduled tours.

Celebrating Customer Service

Customer Service Week celebrates the importance of customer service and the people who serve and support customers on a daily basis. That’s you!

While Customer Service Week is Oct. 2 to Oct. 6, County employees demonstrate HEART all year long. Read how Public Health served like a superhero, Clerk of the Board of Supervisors alleviated the stress of a customer, and Agriculture, Weights & Measures was the “bee’s knees.” These are just some examples of positive experiences delivered in the past year.

Share the praise this week! Submit feedback about excellent customer service that you’ve received. Submissions might appear here on InSite.

The week is also an opportunity to recommit to customer service. Here are six training opportunities for you to advance your skills:

  • Communicating Effectively with Your Customers: In this class, you’ll look at how to turn every experience into a meaningful one for our customers. Participants will be focusing on communication to improve the customer experience. (2 hours)

  • Serving Diverse Customers: This training will increase your awareness of existing diversity in the workplace and focus on recognizing internal and external customer differences. (1.5 hours)

  • Customer Service Excellence: In this class we will look at the big picture of what customer service means in the County, as well as do some skill building regarding assisting difficult customers and working in teams. (1.5 hours)

  • Creating a Positive Experience for Our Customers: In this training you will learn about the County's customer service culture and what it means to serve with HEART. (20 minutes)

  • Customer Service Skills: Definitions and 17 Examples: Customer service skills are traits and practices that equip you to address customer needs and foster a positive experience. Read this Indeed article to learn more. (20 minutes)

  • Being a Good Listener: We hear a lot about how to speak well in public, but very little about how to learn the equally important art of listening properly to others. Learn more in this short training. (5 minutes)

Halloween Happenings Draw Near

Update: The deadline to enter the Lip Sync Battle has been extended to noon, Friday, Oct. 27.

Beware! The witching hour is upon us. The County is hosting a spooktacular array of Halloween-themed activities through Oct. 31. Employees are invited to participate in all the frighteningly fun festivities. Get your costumes ready – it’s going to be a ghoulishly good time!

Halloween Festival

This Oct. 31, the plaza at the County Operations Center (COC) will be transformed into “Halloweentown” with ghoulish games, creative crafts, a lip sync battle, creepy crawlies, a photo booth, candy and more tricks and treats from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

See what all the hocus pocus is about. Join us for the festival! All costumed and non-costumed employees are welcome.

If you can’t make it in person, be there in spirit—watch the event live on InSite. The livestream will start at approximately noon.

Lip Sync Battle

Back from the dead is the County’s Lip Sync Battle competition. A live showdown will take place during the Halloween Festival at the COC on Oct. 31.

Individuals or groups interested in competing should email communications@sdcounty.ca.gov or text 619-481-4309 by 2 p.m., Oct. 17. The entry should include the following:

  • Name and department of all participants

  • Song you plan to perform, if selected as finalist. Remember that costumes, song choices and choreography must be appropriate for work.

  • A 30-second audition video. CAO Project Manager Royce Abalos shared an example for inspiration.

From the submissions, five finalists will be selected to impress the audience with their lip sync skills, style and performance.

The competition will start at noon. Come out to cheer on your favorite contender or watch live on InSite. Winners will be selected by the COC audience.

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Carve some time out to enter this awesome autumn contest. The County will host a Pumpkin Carving Contest for employees. To enter, email one photo of your carved pumpkin by noon on Oct. 27. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes are welcome, as long as they are real pumpkins.

The top five finalists will be named on Oct. 30 and employees will be able to select the winner via an InSite poll through 5 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Costume Contest and Virtual Costume Party

More Halloween fun can be had by sharing your 2023 spooky, kooky or cute costume creations. Just email a photo of yourself in costume to communications@sdcounty.ca.gov to join the virtual costume party. Photos will be added to a gallery on InSite. Be sure to include your name, department and who or what you are masquerading as.

All submitted photos will be entered into the costume contest. The deadline to submit a photo for consideration in the costume contest is 4:30 p.m., on Oct. 31.

The Halloween committee will select up to 10 finalists. And on Nov. 1, employees will be able to select the winner via InSite poll through 5 p.m. The top vote-getter will be crowned on Nov. 2.

Treat Yourself to Tacos

Halloween is on a Tuesday this year. Make it a taco Tuesday!

The County Employees’ Charitable Organization is hosting a Rubio’s lunch fundraiser. This is your opportunity to have lunch available for pick up at the COC Commons and support CECO. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the nonprofit. 

Order lunch here. Be sure to follow instructions on the order form to pay ahead of time. The deadline to submit your pre-order is Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Orders will be available for pickup from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 31 – at the Halloweentown Festival at the County Operations Center.
