Join County Parks and VALOR Employee Resource Group for the Warrior Hike challenge at El Capitan County Preserve on Saturday, May 25.
“El Cap” is popular among active and retired military personnel. So Parks designed an event in 2015 that could "wow" and challenge them as well as their friends and family. Warrior Hike Challenges now take place twice a year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day weekends.
By breaking the hike into three levels, participants can choose their own adventure; navigating the length of trail that matches their individual interest and ability. Celebration stations sit at the 1-mile and 3-mile turnaround points. Extreme hikers will push their limits to climb to the summit for a 12-mile trek through the scenic preserve.
BOOT CAMP (Moderate):
Families and beginning hikers will enjoy a quick, 1-mile uphill jaunt to the ridge for a beautiful view of eastern San Diego. This trail is 2 miles round-trip and is open to all ages.
Duration: Approx. 1 hour | Start between 7 and 11 a.m.
RECON (Moderate-Difficult):
Skilled hikers can continue on to the next peak for just over 6 miles round-trip. This hike is best suited for teens and adults in good shape.
Duration: Approx. 3 hours | Start between 7 and 11 a.m.
WARRIOR (Difficult):
This trek is not for the faint of heart or ability; Warriors will hike 12 miles, traversing multiple inclines and declines with several hundred feet of elevation gain and loss. Be like this local Warrior – who has hiked to and from the summit 100+ times!
Duration: Up to 7 hours | Start no later than 9 a.m.
All hikers should bring ample water (1+ gallons for Warriors), and wear sturdy hiking boots. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a walking stick or poles are also recommended.
Healthy refreshments are available at celebration stations, including the staging area at the base of the preserve, located of Wildcat Canyon Road at 13775 Blue Sky Ranch Road in Lakeside. Park staff are always on site and along the trail to answer questions and lead groups.
The event is free and registration is not required. All ages were welcome.

The Asian Pacific Alliance of County Employees resource group kicked off Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month with a lively gathering at the County Operations Center earlier this month. The celebration focused on examining the past, present and future of Asian-Pacific Islander heritage including cultures and traditions.
The event featured a traditional Japanese taiko drumming performance and a Chinese martial arts demonstration. In addition, APACE folded, strung and displayed 1,000 origami cranes, which are a symbol of hope and healing. The cranes will be donated to local nonprofit Joey’s Wings Foundation—where they will be made into mobiles and other items for sale. All proceeds will go to pediatric cancer research and outreach.

He had never volunteered before.
But in 2018, Juan Salgado, an administrative analyst at the County Psychiatric Hospital, decided to participate in the annual homeless count.
He chose the San Diego River, where count volunteers are guided by the San Diego River Park Foundation. While Salgado was counting homeless people in the area near Mission Gorge Road, he noticed the large amounts of garbage on the river banks.
Salgado learned the San Diego River Park Foundation oversees cleaning the river and decided he would volunteer his time and help to remove trash.
“Counting the homeless was such a positive experience, it inspired me to continue volunteering and pick up trash,” said Salgado, who’s been with the County for three years and has been in his current position for the past three months. “I saw the mountains of trash and thought, ‘This is terrible.’”
In 2018, Salgado volunteered one day each week, donating about 180 hours of his time to remove trash from the river. Every year, Foundation volunteers remove about 200,000 pounds of trash.

Salgado said it’s a common misconception that the trash and debris that end up in the river is dumped there by the homeless people that live in the river banks.
He said the trash in the river is the result of storm water and winds that blow trash into the river. Trash also comes from motorists and people who dump unwanted items into the river.
“We’ve seen places where people just leave their trash in the river. It’s carelessness about the river,” said Salgado, who recently was the guide for the Asian Pacific Alliance of County Employees and Emerging Workforce Association volunteers when they travelled the river banks documenting invasive plant species using a smartphone app.
Earlier this year, Salgado was a guide during the 2019 homeless count and said he will do it again in 2020. He is still volunteering on weekends and plans to do it for the foreseeable future because he wants to continue serving his community. He lives near the river along Mission Gorge Road.
“It’s really gratifying. When we’re out there, people realize how pretty it is down there,” Salgado said. “You get some exercise and you’re helping your community. Volunteering is such great thing to do.”
