Knowing Your Blood Pressure Saves Lives, Know Your Numbers

February is American Heart Month, making it the perfect time to reflect on the loved ones we have in our lives and our own heart health.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, and second leading cause of death in San Diego County.

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. High blood pressure typically has no signs or symptoms. It is often called a silent killer.

That’s why it is important to get your blood pressure checked and “know your numbers.” Knowledge is power, and in this case, potentially lifesaving.

For the last 14 years Love Your Heart has shown the County’s commitment to promoting and providing free blood pressure screenings and education. This effort reaches across the border in Mexico, under Ama tu Corazón.

This year Love Your Heart officially starts Feb. 10, and runs through Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Many County workplaces are offering free screenings. A list of sites throughout the County is online at LoveYourHeartSD.org.

Please mark your calendar and try to make the time to get screened and learn your numbers. It only takes five minutes.

In addition, the Department of Human Resources is offering two free webinars during the County’s Love Your Heart annual event inviting  local  experts to speak on heart health. Both events will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025

314 County Employees Volunteered for Point-in-Time Count

This year, 314 County Employees volunteered to take part in the region’s Point-in-Time Count to find people experiencing homelessness.

The Point-in-Time Count is led by the Regional Task Force on Homelessness and provided a one-day count of the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Diego County, including those in emergency shelters and safe parking lots.

The results are used to apply for federal and state funding to help people experiencing homelessness and find solutions on how to best serve this vulnerable population.

This year, hundreds of community volunteers gathered in different locations throughout the region where they are separated into teams, and they walk or drive the streets, parks, beaches and valleys looking for people who are experiencing homelessness.

Don't Be a Data Cookie Monster – Protect Data

As we celebrate Data Privacy Day on Jan. 28, it's a timely reminder that personal data is precious - and we have a responsibility to protect the privacy of others, just as we would our own.

It can be tempting to be a "data cookie monster" gobbling up as much data as is available, and potentially leaving behind crumbs wherever we go. By being mindful of privacy best practices, we can consume data responsibly and avoid putting data at risk.

The County of San Diego has physical, administrative and technical controls in place to protect and safeguard County information. Employees should refer to Departmental, Group, and CAO Admin Manual Policies as a guide for handling and safeguarding County information.

Additionally, the County of San Diego Chief Technology Office TechBlog and monthly Security Awareness News are resources for you to stay up on privacy and security considerations. Visit Security Awareness - Monthly Newsletter January 2025 for this month’s security awareness newsletter.
