Raise Your Heart Hands and Celebrate National Nonprofit Day with CECO

woman making a heart with her hands

Celebrate National Nonprofit Day this Aug. 17 and show your support for the San Diego County Employees’ Charitable Organization. CECO is the County’s very own nonprofit that is operated by fellow employees who volunteer their time to meet the organization’s mission and distribute 100% of funds raised back to the community.

Lend your hand and celebrate this day by emailing CECO your heart hands picture. The first 50 photos received will be given a CECO reusable straw as a token of CECO's appreciation, as well as be highlighted to show the County family’s support of CECO.

Since forming in 1956, CECO has given more than $7 million back to San Diego County. Contributions from employees and retirees to CECO are awarded to local nonprofits each year, as well as to assist employees in needed. Earlier this year, CECO distributed $120,130 in grants and assistance to 82 local nonprofit programs and County employees. Charitable organizations that received grants include Crisis House, Chicano Federation of San Diego County, Reading Legacies, Mama's Kitchen, Inc., Survivors of Torture, International and Voices for Children.

Pledge to celebrate National Nonprofit Day all year. Sign up to make bi-weekly payroll contributions of $2 or more. Other ways to support CECO include making a donation or by shopping AmazonSmile where a portion of your purchase will be donated to CECO.

The 5 Ws of the Code of Ethics

Know the Code logo

Know the Code is a new monthly series highlighting different sections of the County of San Diego Code of Ethics.

By the Office of Ethics and Compliance

Every public servant, elected, appointed, or hired, enters into an agreement with the people: that as a public servant they will act ethically and seek to promote the public interest in the work that they do.

The introduction to the County’s Code of Ethics, by our Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer highlights that commitment:

“Dear fellow County employees,

This Code of Ethics was created to serve as both a pledge and guide for all County employees. It includes our Standards of Conduct and our General Principles and is intended to guide and assist us in the actions we take and the decisions we make as public servants of the County of San Diego. Our code of ethics is the foundation of our County culture and must be reflective in everything we do.

Our reputation, personally and collectively, is formed by our actions and performance – which we expect to reflect our core values. All employees are expected to be aware of, and behave in accordance with, our Code of Ethics, and to embrace our core values.

To achieve our public service goals, the County of San Diego must support an internal environment that nurtures and encourages ethical conduct. Practicing ethical and legal conduct is essential to fulfilling the County’s mission and to each employee’s individual success.

It is our duty to continually earn the public’s trust by always advancing the public interest and refraining from the pursuit of private interests. Our Commitment to integrity, in our duties, and in our interactions with each other, and with our stakeholders will help us earn and maintain the public’s trust.

Ethics has always been and will always be important to the County of San Diego. Our commitment to it is written on our County seal, “The noblest motive is the public good.”

Thank you for making ethics and integrity an important and fundamental aspect of who we are, how we serve the public and in how we continually demonstrate that the noblest motive is the public good.”

The County Code of Ethics is applicable in the performance of all County business and is openly shared with the general public and can be found on our County webpage at SanDiegoCounty.gov

Check out the OEC webpage on InSite for information about upcoming Ethics & Compliance program events, training and resources including monthly “Know the Code” articles and micro-training videos.

Indigenous Sovereign Nations ERG Share Culture at COC

The newest employee resource group, the Indigenous Sovereign Nations, held a Pow Wow celebration Tuesday at the County Operations Center Plaza to share their cultures.

Adults and children in indigenous dress representing various tribes, part of the Soaring Eagles San Diego troupe, performed cultural dances to the beat and songs of the Green River Drum Group. Tribal elders and County officials spoke to those in attendance to mark the significance of the group’s addition to the County employee resource groups.

The Indigenous Sovereign Nations ERG will focus on cultural education, professional development, social events and hopes to serve as a resource on community matters, needs and policies.

Indigenous Sovereign Nations joins 10 other established ERGs at the County. Each ERG works to enhance cultural awareness, support workforce outreach, recruitment and retention, promote County initiatives though partnerships with departments and community-based organizations and to provide professional development and networking opportunities for members.

To learn more about the ISN ERG, read this question and answer piece with ERG president Maria Whitehorse and email isn.fgg@sdcounty.ca.gov.
